MOULTRIE — The Colquitt County junior varsity boys and girls soccer teams had to make the long trek to Warner Robins on Saturday and play both Warner Robins and Houston County at different locations.

And it was a long day for both teams, with JV girls losing 4-2 to Warner Robins and 3-1 to Houston County and JV boys falling 6-1 to the Demons and 4-1 to the Bears.

The JV girls were bolstered by six eighth-grade girls borrowed from the middle school team, but they weren’t enough.

In their match against Warner Robins, the JV Lady Packers fell behind 4-0 before getting goals from Lauren Kelshaw and Marlena Medina to make it 4-2 at the half.

And that was the final.

Jessie Hester moved to the nets in the second half and shut out the Demonettes.

“It was a new group of girls,” Coach Andy Chapura said.

“But they played hard.”

After eating lunch and busing to Houston County, the Lady Packers battled to a 0-0 halftime tie and took the lead with 25 minutes left in the match on a goal by Jordan Hammack.

Colquitt held the lead for 15 minutes before the Lady Bears tied it and then scored two more times in the final five minutes.

“We were still hustling even down by two,” Chapura said. “We never gave up. We had some chances.

“I was happy with how everyone of them played. That was a lot to ask of those kids in one day.”

The Colquitt County JV boys fell behind 1-0 early in its match with Warner Robins, then quickly tied it on a goal by Giovanny Rico.

The JV Demons added another goal before the half, then rolled in the second half to a 6-1 victory.

“They put everything together in the second half,” Colquitt County Coach Ashley Hill said of Warner Robins.

Against Houston County, the JV Packers were down 4-0 at the half and fell 4-1.

Rico again had the only goal for the JV Packers, now 1-2.

Hill said Victor Guerrero played two strong games at keeper.

“He had stopped 22 or 23 shots in that first game,” Hill said.

Warner Robins and Houston County are likely the top two teams in the region, Hill said.

“They are coached extremely well,” Hill said.

The Colquitt County junior varsity teams will play host to Warner Robins and Houston County on Saturday, March 15.

The two Colquitt County teams will be in action again next Saturday at home against Coffee. The girls will start at 11 a.m. The boys game will follow.
