MOULTRIE — The Colquitt County boys cross country team placed first and the girls team came in second in the Dougherty Invitational held Thursday at Robert Cross Middle School in Albany.
The Colquitt County boys defeated the always formidable Westover team 48-49.
Colquitt County’s Heath Lamb finished second in the boys race, which included some 80 runners.
Also running for the Packers were Carlos Charles, who was fourth; Julio Perez, seventh; Craig Dabdoub, ninth; Joseph Strickland, 26th; Jebb Cato, 30th; Judd Cato, 36th; and Ben Hoover, 38.
The Colquitt County girls finished just five points behind Westover to take second place.
The Lady Patriots had 33 points. Colquitt County’s girls had 38.
The Lady Packers were led by Lindsey Causey, who was third.
Also running for Colquitt County were Karlie Brown, who was sixth; Carla Duque, eighth; Morgan Hayes, 14th; Carly Moore, 24th; and middle schooler Angel Strickland, who came in 30th.
“That was an outstanding finish for a middle schooler,” Coach Mell Wier said.
The girls race drew 70 runners form nine teams.
The meet was the last of the season for the Colquitt County boys and girls cross country teams before the Thursday, Oct. 30, Region 1-AAAAA meet, which will be held at Packer Park.
The junior varsity race will begin at 3:15 p.m.; the girls varsity race at 4 p.m.; and the boys varsity race at 4:45 p.m.
The meet will be just third at the new course at Packer Park. Last week’s meet at Packer Park drew all the region 1-AAAAA teams except Houston County and Northside. Wier said he expected all eight region teams to compete on Oct. 30.
“We are going to train hard next week,” Wier said. “I think we’re in good shape to peak at the right time.”
