Moore, Helms place first in first meets

Hannah Moore opened her sophomore season with a victory when the University of Georgia swimming and diving team swept the University of North Carolina on Wednesday in Chapel Hill.

The former Colquitt County and Moss Farms diver took first place on the 1-meter board with a 258.44, earning nine points for the Georgia women’s team.

She posted a 274.05 exhibition score on 3-meter.

Owen Blank, Moore’s Georgia teammate and former Colquitt County and Moss Farms teammate, placed fourth on the 3-meter board and fifth on the 1-meter to contribute three points to the Georgia men’s score.

Blank is a freshman.

The Georgia teams will travel to meet Florida in a Southeastern Conference meet on Oct. 30 in Gainesville.

The Georgia teams first home meet will be on Nov. 5 against Georgia Tech.

Ryan Helms won on both boards in his first collegiate meet this week as the University of Tennessee defeated both the University of the Cumberlands and Louisville.

Against Louisville, Helms won the 1-meter competition, scoring a 338.62.

On the 3-meter board, his 397.73 was good enough for first place.

Of this and that:

n Tift County’s eighth-grade football team won the South Georgia Athletic Conference championship, defeating Coffee 22-0 on Wednesday.

The Tift eighth-graders now have gone 7-0 each of the last two seasons.

Hahira won the seventh-grade title, defeating Tift County 26-6.

n The Charleston Southern football team, which has former Packer B.J. Baker playing on the offensive line, will go after its fourth straight victory when it plays Stony Brook (N.Y.) on the road at 3 p.m. today.

The Bucs lost their first three games of the season and will try to climb over .500 for the first time today.

n The Valdosta State University football team will meet Harding today in its Homecoming game.

The defending Division II national champion Blazers are 5-1 overall and 3-1 in the Gulf South Conference. Harding is 2-5 overall and 1-3 in the GSC.

Former Packer Sherard Reynolds will be starting his 35th consecutive game for the Blazers. Reynolds has four interceptions this season and 14 for his career.

n Georgia Southern, where former Packer Carter Jones is the snapper, will meet Appalachian State at 3 p.m. today at Paulson Stadium in a game that will be televised live on SportSouth.

The Eagles are 3-3 overall and 1-2 in the Southern Conference.
