MOULTRIE — Just one victory away from playing for the Georgia Recreation and Parks Association’s 12-and-under state championship, the Colquitt County all-stars have an important state tournament commodity.

Pitching.

After winning their first two state tournament games in Lyons by 11-3 and 6-2, Colquitt County still has plenty of fresh arms.

Coach Joey Hathcock can choose from among Preston Berry, John Gray, Mack Hathcock and Andy Bush today when his team meets Vidalia at 10 a.m. in the final winner’s bracket game.

The winner will face the losers bracket survivor with a chance to win the state championship at 10 a.m. Saturday.

Many believed Thursday’s meeting between Colquit County and Douglas pitted the top two teams in the tournament.

But Douglas could not solve Colquitt County right-hander Austin Mercer, who wetn six innings, giving up two runs on four hits while striking out four.

Mercer did not walk a batter and 49 of his 64 pitches were strikes.

“He did an awesome job,” Joey Hathcock said of Mercer. “He was strong, strong on the mound.”

Berry backed Mercer with a two-run homer.

Clayton Brown went 2-for-3 with a double and a single.

Jonah Bozeman had a two-run single, Daniel Mobley added a double and Bush had a single.

While Mercer was outstanding on the mound on Thursday, it was his offense that helped get his team off and running in Wednesday’s tournament-opening 11-3 victory over Lyons.

In that game, Mercer had two hits, including a two-run homer.

Brown was the winning pitcher on Wednesday.
