MOULTRIE — As it did last year, the Colquitt County High football team opened the season with a relatively easy victory over Region 1-A’s Randolph-Clay on Friday at Tom White Field at Mack Tharpe Stadium, winning 39-7.

And the Packers did not delve deep into the playbook as they looked ahead to traveling to meet a highly regarded Thomasville High next Friday.

The Packers, playing without head coach Rush Propst who was serving a one-game suspension after being ejected from a game last season, led 26-0 at the half and were up 33-0 before Randolph-Clay scored its only touchdown of the game.

Starting quarterback Tyler Brown, Quin Roberson and Alex Littleton combined to throw for 269 yards and three touchdowns and the the first-string defense held the visiting Red Devils at bay.

Colquitt rushed the ball from scrimmage just seven times in the first half and Tevin King broke one of those for a 19-yard touchdown.

The Packers scored on their first four possessions and dominated the first half.

And when Hakeem Peterson took a short pass from Brown and scooted to the end zone of the third play of the second half, the Packers were able to empty their bench.

As they did in their season-opening victory over Randolph-Clay last year, the Packers hit a big pass on their first snap of the game.

This year it was Brown hitting sophomore Ty Smith in stride for a 26-yard gain to the Randolph-Clay 8.

After a pair of incompletions and an apparent touchdown pass to Roberson that was called back, Brown hit Roberson in stride across the middle in the end zone for Colquitt County’s first touchdown of the season.

Rich Tyndall’s conversion made it 7-0 exactly 3 minutes into the season.

Brown completed his first four passes of the Packers next possession before King got the team’s first rushing attempt of the game.

The junior speedster blew past the Red Devils for a 19-yard touchdown run and although Tyndall’s conversion attempt went awry, the Packers led 13-0.

Roberson took over at quarterback on the Packers next possession and drove the Packers on a 31-yard scoring drive. The senior quarterback and wide receiver capped off the drive with an 8-yard touchdown run that he finished with a leap into the end zone.

Tyndall converted and the Packers led 20-0 with 10:07 left in the half.

D’Amonte Ridley got his first varsity touchdown on the Packers next possession.

Brown connected with a slanting Jacob Propst, who was hit hard and coughed up the ball.

But Ridley was there to scoop up the ball and race 26 yards to the end zone for the touchdown.

The extra point attempt again failed, but the Packers led 26-0 with 5:50 left in the half.

Colquitt nearly added to their first-half advantage, driving to a fourth down at the Red Devils 6 with 13 seconds left.

But Roberson’s pass to the end zone bounced off Travis Harris and fell incomplete.

Brown was 8-for-13 for 127 yards in the first half and Roberson was 3-for-8 for 69 more.

King returned the second-half kickoff 43 yards to the Randolph-Clay 48 and Brown wasted little time getting the Packers to the end zone.

The junior quarterback connected with Roberson for a 35-yard pass-and-run and dumped a short pass to Peterson, who galloped to the corner of the end zone.

Tyler Dismuke then came on to drill the conversion through and the Packers led 33-0 less than a minute into the second half.

The Packers punted for the first time at the end of their next possession and had to do it from deep in their territory, setting up Randolph-Clay on the Colquitt 33.

The Red Devils made one first down, but then faced a fourth-and-six from the Colquitt 19.

Randolph-Clay then scored its only touchdown with 23.7 seconds left in the third quarter on a 19-yard, fourth-down touchdown pass from Joshua McFather to Al’Kawan Sullivan.

Colquitt got its final touchdown with when sophomore Alex Littleton connected with Octavius Little for a 25-yard touchdown.

The Packers botched the extra point attempt, but with a 33-7 lead with 6:02 left, it mattered little.

Brown finished 10-for-16 for 175 yards and two touchdowns. Roberson was 3-for-8 for 69 yards and Littleton completed 1-of-7 for the final touchdown.

Propst led he Packers with four catches for 55 yards. Roberson and Tommy Hudson each had two catches for 48 yards.

In other Friday scores, Ware County edged Coffee, 17-13; Lowndes drilled Woodland 75-14; Roswell beat Tift County 42-7; Valdosta pounded Jenkins 47-0; and Warern Robins won over Wheeler 44-6. On thursday, Northside routed Perry, 42-10.
