12-and-under all-stars win Americus tournament

The Colquitt County Gold 12-and-under A All-Stars won five straight games to win the championship in the Americus Kiwanis Baseball Tournament held last weekend.
Seven teams competed in the 12-and-under division.
The Gold began play on Friday night with a 15-0 win over the Americus Bulldogs. Logan Wheeler was the winning pitcher going 2 strong innings and Gage Kent struck out the side to close it out.
Wheeler Hunnicutt and Austin Craven led the way with 3 hits each. Hayden Bledsoe, Wheeler, Buck Blalock and Ian Brinson each hit a home run.
Game 2 saw the Gold beat the Schley County All-Stars 12-0.
Austin Singletary and Bledsoe combined to each pitch two strong innings of no-hit baseball and record five strikeouts each. Bledsoe, Wheeler, Blalock, Brinson, Kent, Griffin Simmons each contributed two hits and Hunnicutt, Gabe Parker and Geoffrey Zeigler had one hit.
In game 3, the Gold defeated Worth Co. All-Stars 26-0.
Hunnicutt, Blalock and Craven combined to throw a no-hitter and record seven strikeouts in three innings. Bledsoe and Blalock led the way with three hits and a home run each.
Brinson had two hits and one home run. Hunnicutt, Craven, Kent, Simmons, Zeigler and Chason Fannin each chipped in two hits.
In the semifinals, the Gold defeated the tenacious Moultrie Black All-Stars 8-0.
Hunnicutt went the distance in recording the shutout, giving up four hits and striking out seven.
Craven led the way with two hits including a double and triple. Kent added a 2 run home run.
The Gold won the championship by defeating the Americus A’s 8-0 behind the 4-hit, four-strikeout performance in four innings by Craven. Blalock struck out the side in the fifth in the heart of Americus’ order to preserve the victory.
The defensive play of the tournament was made when Singletary caught a shallow fly ball behind second base and doubled the runner off first base when Brinson made a stellar backhand stab on the throw.
Wheeler and Parker each hit solo home runs to give the Gold their first two runs and all of the cushion they would need. Hunnicutt and Bledsoe each had two hits.
For the tournament the Gold had a .561 batting average and seven pitchers combined to throw 20 scoreless innings with 37 strikeouts, nine hits and only four walks.
The Gold next plays in the GRPA District III tournament in Bainbridge. The tournament will begin Saturday and continue through Wednesday of the following week.
