MOULTRIE – With the Colquitt County boys tennis team’s berth in the Region 1-6A tournament on the line on Wednesday, Bailee Fountain came up big.
The Packers match against Lowndes was tied 2-2 when Fountain outlasted Wells Dameron 7-5, 6-7, 7-6 at No. 2 singles to enable Colquitt to clinch a berth in next month’s region tournament.
Both of Colquitt County teams took advantage of playing at Packer Park this week.
The boys 3-2 win over the Vikings will send them against top-seeded Tift County in the first round of the region tournament that will be held on April 8 at McKey Park in Valdosta.
The Lady Packers eliminated Valdosta 3-0 on Thursday on their home courts and will face Lowndes in the region tournament.
The Colquitt boys also won at No. 3 singles where Harrison Lampman won over Ethan Cotton 6-3, 6-2, and at No. 1 doubles where Ty Hurst and Josh Scroggins defeated Jacob Howard and Eli Johnson 7-6(7-4), 6-4.
At No. 1 singles, Colquitt’s Jack Taunton lost to the Vikings Holden Walton 0-6, 1-6.
The No. 2 doubles team of Banks Flowers and Parker Anderson fell in three sets to Wyatt Galbraith and Ethan Stoutamire 6-4, 4-6, 5-7.
The Packers also had defeated Lowndes 3-2 in the regular season by a 3-2 score.
The Colquitt boys will try to avenge a 1-4 regular-season loss when they meet the Blue Devils at McKey Park.
Tift’s boys will take a 5-0 region record into the tournament.
The Colquitt County girls were 3-2 in the regular season and duplicated their easy win over Valdosta on Thursday.
Jaelyn Wier and Laura Gonzales, playing No. 2 doubles, quickly got the Lady Packers first point with a 6-0, 6-0 win.
The No. 1 doubles team of seniors Ada Craft and Jayley Johnson won 6-2, 6-2.
Craft and Johnson are first in the region among No. 1 doubles teams with a 5-1 record.
The other team point came when freshman Allie Rowley won at No. 3 singles 6-1, 6-3.
Senior Emily Lampman was up 6-2, 5-3 at No. 2 singles when the Lady Packers clinched.
Julia Costin, at No. 1 singles, was battling back after losing the first set 3-6. She was 3-4 in the second when her match was stopped.
Lady Packers coach Amber Day said her girls, the No. 3 seed, are looking forward to meeting Lowndes in the region tournament.
“We lost the regular-season match against them earlier in the season 1-4 and all the girls felt like they did not play well that day and have been wanting a rematch,” she said.
The Vikettes are the No. 2 seed in the tournament.
