MOULTRIE – The Colquitt County slow pitch softball team got its first victory in 25 years on Wednesday when it defeated East Laurens 13-9.
And the Lady Packers immediately tacked on an 18-5 win in the second game of its Area doubleheader against the Lady Falcons at Packer Park.
Colquitt County played slow pitch softball from 1984 through 2000, when the sport was given up in lieu of fast pitch.
Last year, the school elected to offer slow pitch as a spring sport again this season.
The Lady Packers opened the season with a 19-4, 19-0 doubleheader loss against an outstanding and established West Laurens program last week.
The home sweep on Wednesday evened the new program’s record at 2-2.
Colquitt will try to get over .500 when its plays host to Macon County in a 5 p.m. doubleheader on March 19.
“We’ve gotten a whole lot better, especially at the plate,” said Colquitt County coach Chance Pitts. “The confidence is better now that we’ve seen slow pitch and are practicing it more.
“It’s really important getting that confidence, knowing we can do it.”
Pitts was especially pleased with the pitching of Caselynn Allen and Kamry Paulk.
“They threw strikes and limited the walks, which was huge,” Pitts said. “We’ve still got to clean up a few defensive things and we’ll be fine.”
East Laurens, which came down from East Dublin, took one-run leads in the first inning of both games on Wednesday, but the Lady Packers quickly took control of each game.
After the Lady Falcons scored four runs in the top of the first inning of Game 1, the Lady Packers countered with three runs in the bottom of the inning and took the lead for good with three more in the second.
Colquitt led 13-4 until East Laurens scored a single run in the sixth and four in the seventh.
Rhyleigh Tillery started the first game in the circle for the Lady Packers, pitching to catcher Marley Armstrong.
The infield consisted of Anna Lynn Armstrong at first, Allen at second, Ryleigh Webb at third and Allie Eure at shortstop.
Paulk started in left field; Caroline Eidson, in left center; Karleigh Heard in right center; and Addison Moore in right field.
Colquitt played as the visitor in Game 2 and scored two runs in the top of the first inning.
East Laurens took the lead with three in the bottom of the inning.
But the Lady Packers scored four in the third, three in the fifth and put the game away with nine in the seventh.
The second-game lineup was much the same as the first game’s, although Keylee Sanders started behind the plate.
