VALDOSTA – The Colquitt County boys golf team shot its second straight sub-300 tournament score on Monday and it was good enough for a win at Stone Creek Golf Club.
With junior Michael Hall and sophomore Leighton Hood each shooting a 73, the Packers turned in a 297 to beat Lowndes by one shot in the annual Wildcat Invitational.
Colquitt shot a 296 in the season-opening Camden Classic at Osprey Cove in Kingsland on February 15.
The Packers also counted a 75 from freshman Cavin Hall and a 76 from sophomore Jacob Rowell on Monday.
Reese Hood shot a 79.
Michael Hall and Leighton Hood each made the all-tournament team.
Freshman Noah Davis of Lowndes had the tournament’s best round, a 71.
The Vikings’ Mason Pate also shot a 73.
Leighton Hood’s 73 was his lowest tournament score ever.
And Rowell shot his final nine holes at 1-under par.
“I’m really proud of how much better Jake, Leighton and Reese have gotten since last year,” said Packers coach Andrew Eunice. “They have practiced every day for the past year and it shows now.”
Eunice said Michael Hall’s score could have been a 67 on a normal putting day for him.
“Cavin hasn’t played his best yet, but it shows how good he is to still finish seventh,” Eunice said. “All five players are going to be tough to beat when they play together.”
Other Region 1-6A teams who competed on Monday were Tift County, which shot 319, and Valdosta, which shot 391.
The Colquitt County boys team will be off until March 17 when it returns to Valdosta to compete in the Viking Classic at Kinderlou Forest Golf Club.
The Packers will play in the Parkview Classic on March 22 at Stone Mountain Golf Club and in the Blue Devil Invitational on March 24 at Spring Hill Country Club in Tifton.
The annual Packer Invitational will be held March 29 at Sunset Country Club.
