Walters-Smith again named
Offensive Player of the Year

MOULTRIE- For the second year in a row, Colquitt County’s Amira Walters-Smith has been named the Offensive Player of the Year in Region 1 of the state’s highest classification.
And teammate Amareyia Knighton was named to the All-Region first team for the fourth-straight season.
Lady Packers sophomore Nacardia Robinson joined Knighton on the All-Region 1-6A first team.
Caylnn Singletary was named to the second team and sophomore Nazaria Battle received honorable mention.
Walters-Smith, who was named to the All-State team as a junior last year, averaged 18.2 points a game for the Lady Packers this season.
The long-distance shooting and defense-penetrating senior also finished her career with 2,074 career points.
She played her freshman season at Camilla’s Westwood School, a Georgia Independent Athletic Association program in Camilla, where she scored 448 points and averaged 17.2 points a game.
As a sophomore, she moved to Mitchell County High School, where she scored 660 points and averaged 22.8 points a game.
She has been the Lady Packers leading scorer the last two seasons, also averaging 17.0 points as a junior last year.
Knighton played in 103 games as a Lady Packer and finished her career with 1,302 points, which ranks seventh all-time among Lady Packer basketball players.
This season she scored 327 points and averaged 12.6 points a game.
The Region 1-6A Player of the Year is Lowndes senior Kaci Demps, who helped lead the Vikettes to the region tournament championship and a first-round state tournament victory over Marietta.
Richmond Hill senior Mmekom Inyang received the Defensive Player of the Year Award.
Courtney Fleming of Lowndes was named the Coach of the Year.
The Vikettes are 21-5 as they prepare for their second-round state tournament game against Mill Creek on Friday at home.
Also named to the first team are senior Arayana Thomas and junior Kayla Jackson of Lowndes; senior Jada Brown and junior Cullen McCormick of Richmond Hill; sophomore Mahliya Reeder and senior Ty’Tionna Scott of Camden County; senior Jalaya Miller of Tift County; and junior Lauren Bloom of Valdosta.
Also on the second team are senior Shamiaha Webb and junior Bryana Thomas of Lowndes; junior Emari Brown of Richmond Hill; sophomore Summer Elberhart of Valdosta; sophomore Mackenzie Holliday and junior Amiya Jordan of Tift County; and freshman Lea’Nah Parrish and senior J’Mya Albertie of Camden County.
Also earning honorable mention are junior Laila Foster of Lowndes; senior Ariyana Canady of Richmond Hill; senior Dasmine Cooper of Camden County; and junior Jaziyah Johnson of Tift County.
