MOULTRIE — Colquitt County sheriff’s deputies arrested two men Jan. 29 after they allegedly fled from a traffic stop. Three firearms were seized, including two that officers said had been converted to fire in a fully automatic mode.
On Jan. 29, sheriff’s deputies stopped a vehicle that had a busted windshield and an obscured tag. They identified the driver as Kimori Ty’Shawn Ward and the passenger as Milton David Barfield Jr.
Sheriff’s Office Investigator Ivon Folsom said the vehicle came to a halt. During the encounter between the deputy and Ward, the deputy smelled the odor of marijuana coming from the vehicle, Folsom said.
As soon as the secondary deputy pulled-up, said Folsom, Ward and Barfield took off from the traffic stop. They managed to drive a few blocks away before wrecking in a yard on 12th Avenue Southeast.
Ward was apprehended just outside of the vehicle and was found in possession of a firearm, Folsom said. Barfield ran from the vehicle and was apprehended a block away.
“In the process of running from our deputy, he dropped one firearm, and when he was arrested, he had another firearm on his person,” Folsom said. “Both of the firearms that were in Milton’s possession had Glock switches on them. They are utilized to convert a semi automatic pistol into a fully automatic pistol.”
A semi-automatic weapon fires one bullet each time the trigger is pulled. A fully automatic one continues to fire bullets as long as the trigger is held down.
Also in Barfield’s possession were digital scales and a quantity of marijuana.
Ward was charged with a variety of traffic violations including DUI. He was also charged with possession of a firearm by a convicted felon, attempting to elude officers, possession of a firearm during the commission of a crime and possession of a dangerous weapon.
Barfield was charged with two counts of possession of a dangerous weapon, possession of tools for commission of a crime, possession of a firearm during commission of a crime, obstruction of officers, and possession of marijuana with intent to distribute.
Both men were booked into the Colquitt County Jail.
