MOULTRIE – Five more Colquitt County football players signed to continue their football careers on Wednesday.
With Day’Shawn Brown, Ramsey Dennis, Brett Fitzgerald, Tre’Millian Jackson and Casey Scott affixing their signatures to National Letters of Intent, Colquitt County now has eight total signees.
In December, Amari Wilson signed with Georgia Southern, Jartavius Flounoy with Georgia State and Khalil Collins with South Florida.
Colquitt County football coach Sean Calhoun said as many as three more Packers could sign.
Fitzgerald, the record-setting All-State kicker, signed with Georgia Military College, but is still being recruited.
“He is locking that down for sure and it is one of the best junior colleges in the country,” Calhoun said.
It is still likely that Fitzgerald will sign with a four-year program, “and the GMC guys know that.
“This is just another step in the journey.”
Fitzgerald holds the Georgia state record for career extra points with 228 and career kicking points with 369.
His 47 career field goals are just four behind the state record of 51 held by brother Ryan Fitzgerald, the former Florida State kicker.
If, in fact, Fitzgerald does go to Georgia Military, he is likely to be a teammate again of Dennis, who also signed on Wednesday with the Bulldogs.
“He had other offers,” Calhoun said of Dennis. “I think he is a Division I player.”
Dennis played both offense and defense for the Packers last season, but is definitely a threat with the ball in his hands.
He rushed for 1,628 yards and 20 touchdowns in his career and caught 27 passes for 418 yards and three more scores.
And, as a tribute to his athleticism, Dennis went out for the Colquitt County wrestling team this year and has qualified for the state Sectional at 175 pounds.
Brown signed with Carson-Newman in Jefferson City, Tennessee, where he will join two former Colquitt County teammates, offensive lineman Jay’Den Williams and linebacker Jerron Blakely.
“They are getting a steal with Day’Shawn,” Calhoun said of the accomplished running back.
His 35 career touchdowns ranks ninth all-time at Colquitt County and the 1,301 yards he ran for last season ranks eighth.
“He did a lot of great things for us,” Calhoun said.
Brown rushed for 100 or more yards six times last fall and ran for 189 against Camden County and 188 against Richmond Hill in the final two games of the season to help the Packers claim the Region 1-6A championship.
He also threw a touchdown pass to Dennis in the win over Camden County.
And Brown could fit right in with Carson-Newman’s triple-option offense.
Jackson, a defensive back, signed to play at Culver-Stockton College, in Canton, Missouri.
The Wildcats are a NAIA program and play in the Heart of America Conference.
Jackson was a rotational player in the secondary of the Packers.
“He played on special teams and did a good job when his named was called,” Calhoun said. “He is a quiet, respectful, selfless player and a good teammate.
“His signing shows the people want kids from our program.”
Shorter University in Rome has had a long interest in Scott and it paid off on Wednesday when the 6-foot-1, 290-pounder agreed to become a Hawk.
“Casey has persevered through some tough times, including losing his mother,” Calhoun said of the Packers left guard. “He’s always been one of our leaders and was one of our captains last season.
Scott was credited with 56 pancake blocks last fall.
