LETTER TO THE EDITOR: High school football players are local superstars

Published 3:58 pm Monday, October 9, 2023

To the children of this community, our high school football players and cheerleaders are celebrities. This past week our Pre-K classrooms at Trinity Baptist Church were absolutely star-studded as a few of our high school athletes visited our students.

It is an understatement to say our kids were thrilled. I wish I could adequately describe the excitement on the faces of our little ones when those students walked in the door. The squeals of excitement. The arms reaching out for hugs that were freely returned. The high fives and giggles and mouths hanging open in shock that “real Packers” were in the building with the sm. The athletes even took the time to walk outside to the playground to play with the kids, slide, throw balls, and pose for pictures. It was an hour out of those high schoolers’ day, but it was a lifetime memory for some of our students.

While we should all take pride in living in a community where it still means something to wear that jersey and cheerleading uniform, we should be even more proud of the type of students we have representing us in the Black and Gold. If these are our future community leaders, Colquitt County, I think we’re going to be fine.

Thank you to Mrs. Kimberly Cooper, Coach Sean Calhoun, Coach Stacie McDaniel, and Coach Cleve Edwards for arranging the visit, and a special thank you to Brett Fitzgerald, Chanson Glenn, Cole Holder, Allie Hurst, Kaitlyn Maxwell, Eli Meads, Carli Pearson, Carson Smith, and Ashley Strange for blessing and inspiring the next generation of Packer scholar athletes.
