- The Coastal Plain Nature Trails is a system of interconnecting hiking-biking trails at Reed Bingham State Park with extensive boardwalks and wildlife viewing areas.
Known for its work in natural resource management, particularly efforts to improve habitat for threatened and endangered plants and animals, and its award-winning interpretive programming, Reed Bingham State Park surrounds a 375-acre lake that is also a major boating and water-skiing attraction in South Georgia. Fishing is excellent.
Reed Bingham covers a total land area of 1,613 acres.
Daily activities at the park include boating (canoe and kayak rentals are available), fishing, picnicking, camping, hiking on the Coastal Plain Nature Trails, miniature golf, biking, and volleyball. There are also two playgrounds. The lake features a beach area for swimming, three boat ramps and two ADA-accessible fishing piers.
Camp sites include 46 tent, trailer, RV campsites (18 full hook-up sewer sites) with cable TV hookups available to rent; the Pioneer Campground; Eagle Island paddle-in campsite; seven picnic shelters; and four group shelters that seat between 50 and 120 people.
The Coastal Plain Nature Trails is a system of interconnecting hiking-biking trails with extensive boardwalks and wildlife viewing areas. Approximately 78 percent of the plant communities occurring in the Coastal Plain can be found along these trails, making them some of the most diverse in the country.
Reed Bingham is also a popular destination for birdwatchers and is part of the Southern Rivers Birding Trail. Reed Bingham continues to host a nesting pair of bald eagles. Other famous feathered residents at the park include the vultures that return each winter to avoid the harsh northern conditions, vast numbers of prothonotary warblers, and an occasional sighting of the very rare limpkin.
Visitors are encouraged to come to the office for a listing of interpretive programs that are available during their visit. The programming events have minimum cost associated with them. Church groups, scout groups, school groups, etc are encouraged to call the park office to arrange a hike, native animal programs and more with the interpretive ranger.
Special events will be listed on the website at www.gastateparks.org.
