MOULTRIE — An opportunity for men is coming to Moultrie on Tuesday, Nov. 14, at the NAMI Moultrie meeting. NAMI Moultrie meets in Moultrie First United Methodist Church Fellowship Hall. Refreshments will be served at 5:30 p.m., with the presentation beginning at 5:45.

Albany businessmen Darrel Finnicum and Bruce Pittman will present their video, “Battling Darkness: A Project on Men’s Mental Health.” They will follow the video with time for attendees to ask questions.

Joining Finnicum and Pittman will be Finnicum’s wife Ashley and his mother Connie. Mental health concerns affect the entire family and men are encouraged to bring family members with them to the presentation.

“Historically men have been reluctant to engage in conversation with friends or family about their mental health, subscribing to the belief that it would demonstrate signs of weakness,” said Lynn Wilson, a NAMI Moultrie spokeswoman. “That mindset is changing as men are realizing that staying healthy involves the entire body, including the part of the body above the neck. In fact, it is a sign of strength for individuals to tackle health issues before they become a bigger problem.”

November is known as Men’s Health Awareness Month. This annual global campaign encourages men to participate in various activities to raise awareness about men’s health issues. Wilson said the month-long event focuses on promoting physical and mental well-being among men, addressing issues such as mental health challenges and suicide prevention, and providing a platform for men to discuss their health openly, seek support, and take proactive steps towards a healthier and happier life.

All NAMI meetings are free and open to the public. For questions or further information contact Wilson at 229-891-1725.
