- First Vice Regent and Historic Preservation Chair Jean Gay and Chapter Regent Nancy Coleman presented the Excellence in Historic Preservation Award to Doug DeMott of Gin Creek for Gin Creek’s work in preserving several historic structures.
HARTSFIELD — In observance of National Historic Preservation Month, the John Benning Chapter National Society Daughters of the American Revolution presented Gin Creek Plantation with the Excellence in Historic Preservation Award. This award recognizes individuals who have saved and/or preserved their local history, including restoration of buildings, collections, significant objects, monuments, cemeteries, and other important artifacts.
“The reality of what is now known as Gin Creek, 50 years ago was the dream of Max DeMott — a place of serenity and beauty,” the DAR chapter said in a press release. “Today, Gin Creek is one of the top locations for destination weddings in the South. The DeMott family has added to the natural beauty of South Georgia farmland by including historic structures.”
The Presley Log Cabin is the signature structure at Gin Creek. Built in 1836, this original structure has seen 178 years of special times. The fully exposed logs in the main quarters create an awe-inspiring feeling. The vaulted juniper walls of the bath create the smell of this authentic cedar room. The original staircase takes you up to the loft bedroom overlooking the living space.
In the middle of Gin Creek rest eight historic row cottages, originally located in northwest Moultrie. The cottages were purchased for $1 each by the DeMotts, moved to the present location, and lovingly revived and decorated into the perfect lodging for the many events held at Gin Creek.
The Pack House Wine Tasting Room was built in the 1950s as a place for farmers to store cured tobacco while waiting for the markets to open. Part of its charm is the majesty of a 412-year-old oak tree.
“There are several other components of Gin Creek and RoseMott Vineyards, but these are the historic structures that were recognized by DAR,” the press release said. “The work of the DeMott family to preserve the Presley Log Cabin, the row cottages and the Packhouse is a testament to their commitment to remember the past while functioning in the present.”
