This map from the Georgia Department of Transportation shows where GDOT will close Highway 33 North near its intersection with Highway 133 North. Blue arrows show the route of GDOT’s recommended detour for northbound traffic. Red arrows show the recommended detour for southbound traffic and for people north of the closure to get to Moultrie. The detour is limited to state-maintained roads, but as the map shows, there are county roads that might be more convenient.

MOULTRIE — The Georgia Department of Transportation will close part of Highway 33 to non-local traffic for an extended period of time starting Feb. 16.

The road will close near its intersection with state Highway 133 North, which is under reconstruction as part of a widening project, the DOT said in a press release Friday afternoon.

Traffic heading from Moultrie to Sylvester will be routed onto 133 northward to Doerun, where drivers will turn onto State Route 270 East to meet back up with Highway 33 North.

Southbound traffic will leave Highway 33 on SR 270 then turn onto 133 in Doerun to eventually reconnect with 33 near Moultrie.

The intersection of Highway 133 and Highway 33 is undergoing significant changes as part of the 133 widening project, and the DOT said that’s the reason for the closure.

The DOT said the detour is expected to remain in place until April 25.

Four sections of Highway 133 are under construction between Moultrie and Albany. The section connected to the Highway 33 closure and detour runs from south of US 319 to Mike Horne Road, a little under 14 miles, the DOT said. Construction on this section started the summer of 2021 and the current scheduled completion date is the spring of 2025. The cost is approximately $89 million, which includes preliminary engineering, right of way acquisition and construction.
