Several local officials up for reelection on Tuesday

MOULTRIE – On Tuesday, two Republicans are running for the clerk of Superior Court seat, vacated by Lynn Purvis, while two non-partisan candidates vie for the Superior Court judge office in the Southern Judicial Circuit, which was left vacant by the retiring Judge Richard M. Cowart. Two county Board of Education races also have opposition; they’re on non-partisan ballots too.
Election Day is Tuesday, May 21, and voters can cast their ballots in the general primary/non-partisan election at their assigned poll locations from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m.
There is a new polling location for the Shaw Precinct. Voters should go to the Ryce Community Center, 305 Seventh St. N.W., to cast their ballots on Tuesday.
Residents need to choose either a Republican ballot, a Democrat ballot or a Non-partisan ballot, that they want to vote on before they can cast their vote in the general primary/non-partisan election. The Democrat and Republican ballots will include all of the non-partisan races.
The partisan offices that are up for local reelection include sheriff, clerk of court, tax commissioner, solicitor for state court, coroner and county commissioners for Districts 2, 4 and 6.
The Republicans candidates who qualified are for sheriff, Rod Howell (incumbent); clerk of Superior Court, Jessica C. Boyd and Donna Wilson; tax commissioner, Cindy Harvin (incumbent); state court solicitor, Mickey Waller; coroner, Verlyn Brock (incumbent); County Commissioner 2, Chris Hunnicutt (incumbent); County Commissioner 4, Mike Boyd (incumbent); and County Commissioner 6, Johnny Hardin (incumbent).
The Democrat candidate for sheriff is Ernest Jones.
The non-partisan offices that are up for reelection include probate judge, judge for State Court and Board of Education for Districts 2, 3, and 6.
Candidates who qualified for the non-partisan races are as follows: for probate judge, Wes Lewis (incumbent); judge for State Court, Richard T. Kent; Board of Education member District 2, Jon Schwalls (incumbent) and Brad Gregory; Board of Education member District 3, Keith Adams and Matthew Clifton; and for Board of Education member District 6, Beth Cannon.
At the state level, Rep. Chas Cannon and Sen. Sam Watson, up for reelection in the Georgia General Assembly, are running unopposed.
U.S. Rep. Austin Scott, up for reelection in the U.S. House of Representatives, is running unopposed for the Republican nomination. Darrius Butler and Vince Watkins are running for the Democratic Party nomination to face him in November’s general election.
