Jury indicts 7 in gambling machine cases

Seven people accused in the operation of suspected illegal gambling devices — more than 50 of which have been seized since an investigation was launched in early 2010 — have been indicted by a Colqitt County grand jury.

The latest arrest made in the Moultrie Police Department investigation was of Pushpa P. Patel, who was taken into custody on Tuesday after he already had been indicted.

Pushpa Patel, also known as Bob Patel, 34, 1009 Fifth Ave. S.E., was indicted on six counts of possession of a gambling device, commercial gambling, and violation of Georgia’s Racketeer Influenced and Corrupt Organizations law. The latter generally is referred to as RICO.

The indictment accuses Patel of operating video gaming machines at R&R Quick Mart, 1009 Fifth Ave. S.E., that paid out cash prizes in violation of state law.

Last week, during the most recent of three raids conducted since July, police arrested Avilo Cruz Pereira, Avatar Singh, Mohammad A. Chendery, and Ramesh Patel, all of whom have been indicted by the grand jury.

Pereira, 33, 517 26th Ave. S.E., has was indicted on six counts of possession of a gambling device, two counts of commercial gambling and RICO. He is accused of operating gambling game machines at Danfair, 515 26th Ave. S.E.

Chendery, 48, 2011 West Blvd., was indicted on three counts of possession of a gambling device, two counts of commercial gambling, communicating gambling information and RICO. He is accused of operating gambling machines at Super C, 2011 West Blvd.

Ramesh Patel was named in two indictments. In the first he was indicted on six counts of possession of a gambling device, commercial gambling, communicating gambling information and RICO.

Also charged  in that indictment on the same counts were: Piyush Patel and Darshak Patel. The three are accused of operating gambling machines at Quick Mart, 619 W. Central Ave.

In the second indictment, Ramesh Patel is accused of six counts of possession of a gambling device, three counts of commercial gambling, communicating gambling information and RICO. That indictment accuses him of operating gambling machines at M & M Grocery, 425 First Ave. N.W.

Avatar Singh, also known as Kevin Singh, was indicted on five counts of possession of a gambling device, communicating gambling information, two counts of commercial gambling and RICO.

Singh, 46, 15 Bracken Drive, is accused of operating gambling machines at U.S. Food Mart, 3025 S. Main St.

In other indictments:

• Justin Mitchell Mercer; false imprisonment, criminal damage to property in the second degree, battery (family violence), reckless conduct.

• Amentez A. Slaughter; two counts theft by receiving stolen property, theft by taking, fleeing or attempting to elude an officer, driving without a license, possession of marijuana, obstruction of an officer.

• Frederick Henderson Jr.; robbery by intimidation.

• Toby Norman; cruelty to children.

• Jennifer Karrell Sanders; aggravated assault, possession of a firearm during the commission of a felony.

• Deshan L. Wilson; criminal attempt to commit a felony.

• Jennifer Ann Balfour, also known as Jennifer Ann Moore; aggravated assault.

• Elvin Henry Sr.; cruelty to children, reckless conduct, driving under the influence, open container and driving without a license.

• Averett Oxford Thomas; burglary, obstruction of an officer.

• Floyd Patterson III; possession of an illegal weapon.

• Dennis Lee Mitchell; burglary.

• Cheryl Thomas Edwards; aggravated assault, giving false information to a law enforcement officer.

• Christopher Lee Arant, Angie Renee Beasley and Robert Kennedy; robbery by force, aggravated assault.

• Jasper Leggett Jr., also known as Dramourno Jones; child molestation, burglary.

• Derrick Dewayne Brown; burglary.

• Felicia Brockington Debruce; aggravated assault, possession of a knife during the commission of a felony.

• Alfonza Flournoy and Marcus Norman, also known as Marcus Yates; armed robbery, aggravated assault, possession of a firearm during the commission of a felony. Norman also was indicted on one count of possession of a firearm by a convicted felon.

• Isis Oneila Argueta, 23, 1201 South Blvd.; Alfredo Lara Sr.; and Ozzie Neri Martin; burglary.

• Christopher Shane Alexander Sr., 24, 590 Tree Farm Road; two counts burglary.

• Channara Ngin, 22, 216 Jorday Way, Tifton; aggravated stalking.

• Lyn Hoke Roberts, 43, and Kathleen Virginia Walker; burglary, theft by taking.

• Eric Shawn Mitchell, 17, 123 Funston-Sigsbee Road; burglary, possession of tools for the commission of a crime.

In a second indictment Mitchell is accused of burglary.

• Cameron Harley Kastellic, 17, 471 Dunn Road; theft by taking.

• Anthony Rhodes, 33, 149 Academy St., Funston; rape.

• Henry Gene Ivey, 39, 668 Greenfield Church Road Lot 12, Coolidge; burglary, bestiality.

• Shaquarie Thomas, 29, Meigs; cruelty to children.

In a second indictment he is accused of three counts of obstruction of an officer.

• Christopher Lee Moxley, 25, 160 Mark Orton Lane No. 10, Norman Park; criminal damage to property, theft by taking.

• Ivan Castillo, 20, 350 Honey Bear Road, and Anterrio Merritt, 18, 290 Honey Bear Road, Norman Park; burglary and theft by taking. Merritt only; theft by deception.

• Christy Nicole Hobgood, 22, 1413 Hutchinson Drive; Linda McClean Landrun; and Stephanie Melton, also known as Stephanie Mae Miller; burglary.

• Johnny William Benjamin, 26, 114 Lawson Court, Tifton; burglary.

• Anterrio Merritt, 19, 290 Honey Bear Road, Norman Park, and Christopher Lee Moxley; burglary.

• Michael Alan Jordan, 30, 388 Smokey Bear Road, Norman Park, and Melissa Regina Tucker; theft by receiving stolen property, possession of an illegal weapon, criminal use of an article with an altered identification mark, possession of methamphetamine. Jordan only: manufacture of methamphetamine, unlawful possession of anhydrous ammonia.

• Darla Jo Hockey, 34, 518 Indian Lake Drive; crossing guard line with contraband, possession of marijuana with intent to distribute.

• Michael James Ethridge, 28, 1802 West Blvd., and Charlotte Johnson; criminal attempt to commit a felony, cruelty to children.

• Tony Robin Landrum, 49, 518 Indian Lake Drive, and Gregory Joel Tillman; criminal attempt to commit a felony, unlawful possession of pseudoephedrine. Tillman only: possession of methamphetamine.

• Noah Lew Sangster III, 27, 162 Cook Road Lot D; criminal attempt to commit a felony.
