VALDOSTA — Customers of Regions Bank woke up Monday to a nasty surprise: Their debit cards were not working for point-of-sale transactions.

A Regions customer care officer said the problem was widespread and that a bank team was working to fix the trouble.

The problem was an internal system problem and not a cyber-attack, the bank said in a statement early Monday afternoon. The trouble was resolved and the cards were working again by 1 p.m.
