MOULTRIE — Peyton Arrington had three hits, including a double and a triple, to lead the Colquitt County softball team to a 9-2 victory over Wilcox County on Saturday in Cordele.
The win came in the second game of a doubleheader. The Lady Packers fell to Lanier County 6-2 in the first game. Both were five-inning games.
The second-game victory has the Colquitt County girls at 3-3 as they prepare to meet Bainbridge as part of a junior varsity/varsity doubleheader on Tuesday at Packer Park.
Arrington and Montana Tatum each had two-run singles in the six-run fourth inning that broke open a close game against Wilcox.
The second-game victory also featured the Lady Packers first home run of the season, an inside-the-park four-bagger struck by sophomore right fielder Gracie McKellar with two outs in the second inning.
Arrington also had a base hit in the first game and has hit safely in five of the Lady Packers six games.
Her 4-for-6 performance on Saturday raised her average to a team-leading .500.
RaJayla McBride had the Lady Packers other two hits in the second game.
Kamry Paulk went all five innings in the circle and gave up six hits, but no earned runs. She walked one and struck out two.
Colquitt got behind quickly in Game 1 when Lanier scored six runs in the top of the first inning.
Arrington, the Lady Packers starting pitcher, then settled down and allowed just one more run.
Two of the hits she surrendered were home runs. She also struck out five.
Rhylee Tillery, another contributing sophomore, led Colquitt against Lanier with three hits, including a double.
Libby Wetherington had two singles and Paulk, Arrington and freshman shortstop Allie Eure also had base hits.
Eure’s first career hit, a single to left, drove in a pair of runs in the third inning.
On Tuesday, Colquitt’s girls will be out to duplicate their August 8 season-opening 13-6 victory at Bainbridge.
The Lady Packers banged out 11 hits against the Lady Cats that day, with Paulk chipping in three singles and McBride and Arrington each getting two hits.
The Lady Packers will travel to Cobb County next Friday for three games in the annual Buccaneer Bash.
Colquitt will play North Cobb at 5 p.m. and Chapel Hill at 6:45 p.m. on Friday and face North Paulding at 10 a.m. on Saturday.
