- A cloth flag replaces the original bronze flag that was broken off the World War II veteran outside the Courthouse Annex.
MOULTRIE — John Benning Chapter, National Society Daughters of the American Revolution, joined with local veteran Bill McLean and Colquitt County Facilities Manager Mac Lawson to replace the flag on the sculpture of the World War II veteran who sits on a bench in front of the Courthouse Annex.
When originally dedicated in 2003, the statue had a bronze flag and poppy, which have been broken off at some point, according to a release from the DAR chapter. A temporary flag was placed for D-Day by DAR member Nancy Coleman.
McLean volunteered to work with DAR to find a more permanent solution. Receiving permission from County Administrator Chas Cannon, Coleman and McLean did the necessary research to find a way to secure a flag to the statue. Replacing a bronze flag was not feasible, so they worked on a way to use a cloth flag. The process was more complicated than originally thought, the press release said, but with the perseverance and technical expertise of McLean and Lawson, a receptacle for the flag was created.
The cloth flag will be replaced as needed, the DAR said.
