CAIRO — A 4-year-old girl has died after a two-vehicle collision in Grady County earlier this week.
According to the Georgia State Patrol, the child’s mother, 30-year-old Termara Pinkney, was driving east on County Line Road toward Meigs when she failed to properly yield to a stop sign at the intersection with Georgia Highway 112.
“We don’t know if she rolled through it or what, but either way she failed to yield at the stop sign,” said Trooper Taylor Cooper, who investigated the incident.
As Pinkey crossed the intersection, her Ford Taurus was T-boned by a passing semi headed southbound on 112.
Four-year-old Taraji Emanuel, who was among two other children in the vehicle at the time, was killed in the collision.
The incident occurred at around 2 p.m. Monday.
The two older children who were present in the vehicle were transported by helicopter to Tallahassee, Florida with head injuries. Both surviving children are believed to be recovering well.
Pinkney was transported to Archbold Medical Center in Thomasville to receive treatment for serious injuries sustained in the accident. Cooper was unsure of Pinkney’s exact status Wednesday, but said he was told she was responsive and able to speak.
The driver of the semi voluntarily went to a hospital for treatment but was otherwise uninjured.
Investigators suspect that Pinkney may have stopped at the intersection and looked both ways before checking her phone.
“It’s looking like she did stop and just didn’t look again and decided to continue out into the intersection,” Cooper said.
A specialized collision reconstruction team (SCRT) is currently investigating the incident and will recommend charges in the case, if any.
All children were in the backseat at the time of the crash, Cooper said. GSP is unsure where Emanuel was located in the vehicle at the time of the crash, but assumes that she was likely seated in the backseat on the driver’s side, where the impact occurred.
Pinkney’s vehicle was totaled in the incident.
