Dalton State College to kick off Homecoming 2019

DALTON, Ga. — The homecoming basketball game for Dalton State College will be Saturday, Jan. 26, at 2 p.m. in the Dalton Convention Center against the University of Mobile. Other events open to the community are the Rage and Roar Pep Rally on Wednesday, Jan. 23, at 7 p.m. in the lot behind Mashburn Hall on campus and Unmasking the Past Trivia on Friday, Jan. 25, at 6 p.m. at The Mill. The homecoming game will feature the presentation and crowning of the court during halftime. There is another basketball game the week of homecoming, Thursday, Jan. 24, at 7:30 p.m. at the Dalton Convention Center against Stillman College. Tickets for both games are $6 for general admission. The Second Annual Rage and Roar Pep Rally will give the community a chance to meet the basketball players and hear from Alex Ireland, interim head coach, while celebrating the team with a bonfire. There will also be lawn games and refreshments. The event is free. A new event this year is the trivia night at The Mill, at 825 Chattanooga Ave. Hosting the event are David Elrod, director of the Dalton State Foundation, and Nancy Whaley, a former Dalton State homecoming queen. Current students, alumni and members of the community are invited to participate and celebrate Dalton State through trivia. The event is free, and tacos from Sol de Mayo will be available for purchase for $1 apiece during the event.

Jukebox Oldies, Rhonda and the Relics to entertain at Music Park

LIVE OAK, Fla. — January is flying by in 2019 but not before The Jukebox Oldies and Rhonda and the Relics bring an exciting weekend of music and dancing to the Spirit of the Suwannee Music Park on Friday and Saturday. One of the area’s favorite bands, The Jukebox Oldies, will take the helm on the Music Hall Stage on Friday night to bring a shipload of wonderful music. The Valdosta, Ga., band is a staple in the weekend bands who perform at the SOSMP because their fans want them back again and again. Saturday night, Jan. 19, just get those dancing shoes ready and get back out to the Music Hall for another great night of fun, good food, dancing and music. Rhonda and the Relics like to play many genres of great music such as classic rock, blues, R&B, country, pop and Americana. The Alma, Ga., band’s members are Rhonda Bennett, John Bennett, Mark Hand, Charles Whitley and Mike Lauthan. Doors open Friday and Saturday night at 6 p.m. for dinner. Music begins at 8 p.m. both nights. Admission is free.

Billy Joel Tribute Show at Tift Theatre on January 19

TIFTON, Ga. — Transform yourself into a “New York State of Mind” on Jan. 19 when Mike Santoro brings the sights and sounds of the Big Apple to the historic Tift Theatre with a tribute show featuring the music of the legendary Billy Joel. Sponsored by the Arts Connection at Abraham Baldwin Agricultural College and Augusta Amusements in cooperation with McAlpin Entertainment, the show, titled “The Stranger,” begins at 7:30 p.m. Like Joel, Santoro was born and raised in Levittown, N.Y.  Accompanied by a six-piece band that reportedly brings an “authentic replication of Billy’s timeless music, crowning it with soulful spot-on vocals,” Santoro sings all the great Billy Joel songs and adds a few others from remarkable performers such as Paul McCartney and Elton John for an evening at the Tift Theatre that is sure to make for lifetime memories.
