MOULTRIE, Ga. — Moultrie police nabbed a suspect who locked two store employees in a restroom during a Friday morning robbery after he ditched his car and tried to escape officers on foot.
The robber entered Advance Auto Parts, 1725 First Ave. S.E., at about 7:40 a.m. when there were two employees inside, according to police.
“A black male came inside the store and produced a firearm and demanded money,” said Moultrie Police Department Sgt. Eric Hill. “They put the money in a bag. That’s when he directed them to the back where the restroom was. When officers arrived on scene, they found they were locked in the restroom inside the store.”
One of the employees had a phone in his pocket and called police.
The suspect, identified as William Green, left the store in a silver Honda Civic, Hill said.
“Officers got behind the vehicle and tried to initiate a traffic stop,” he said. “He ended up at Jefferson and Fifth Avenue Southeast, where he got out of the vehicle. He tried to run; that’s when officers were able to apprehend him.”
When police searched the car abandoned by Green they found an “undisclosed amount of money and a weapon that turned out to be a replica gun — like a toy gun,” Hill said. “When I interviewed him, he admitted to doing it (the robbery).”
Green, 56, 518 Northside Drive N.W., was charged with armed robbery and two counts of aggravated assault.
He was in Colquitt County Jail on Friday evening and had not yet had a bond hearing.
The store employees were not injured, and there were no injuries to officers or Green during the pursuit and foot chase, Hill said.
