Colquitt soccer teams split Freedom Cup openers

MOULTRIE – The Colquitt County boys soccer team took the first step toward defending their 2018 Freedom Cup championship by defeating Trinity Christian of Sharpsburg 8-0 on Friday in Warner Robins.
The Lady Packers dropped their Freedom Cup opener, falling to Veterans High 10-2.
Both teams will continue play in the event with two games today.
In playing in less-than-ideal field conditions, the Packers had little trouble with Trinity Christian, jumping out to a 2-0 halftime lead, then scoring five goals in a 10-minute span in the second half to put the game away.
Ruben Gonzalez got the first Colquitt County goal, scoring six minutes into the match, with Pedro Luna assisting.
Aldo Miranda scored in the 33rd minute and the Packers were up by two goals at the half. Uli Malagon assisted on the Miranda goal.
Seven minutes into the second half, Luna scored and Gonzalez assisted and the Packers went up 3-0.
Eleven minuted later, Caden Summerlin scored off an Alex Romulo assist to put the Packers up 4-0.
The final four goals came in quick succession.
Freshman Jason Gallardo made it 5-0 on an unassisted goal in the 61st minutes.
Defender Humberto Aguilar scored the next two Packers goals. Gallardo assisted on both.
Gallardo got the final Packers goal in the 68th minute. Jimenez assisted.
After opening the season with a 5-1 victory over Cairo, the Packers will take a 2-0 record into today’s match.
The Lady Packers fell to 0-2 on the season, losing to a strong Veterans team.
Veterans was up 5-0 at the half and extended the lead to 7-0 before Lexie McDaniel scored for the Lady Packers on a 25-yard free kick in the 65th minute.
Five minutes later, Chloe Gould got behind the Veterans defense and scored the Lady Packers second goal.
Veterans then added the final three goals of the match.
