With Signing Day near, mysteries still abound on Colquitt players

MOULTRIE – For those who like to curl up with a good mystery story, the answers will soon be revealed surrounding several Colquitt County High football seniors.

Even head coach Rush Propst is anxious to see how the story for a lot of his players moves from one chapter to the next.

Fans of the Packers are invited to the high school gymnasium for the second National Signing Day ceremony for the Class of 2019. Propst said things should get started around 1:10 p.m., and the coach said it’s possible 19 Packers will be a part of the festivities.

Of that number, four already signed scholarship papers on the first day of the early signing period in December. They are center Will Rykard and linebacker Rashard Revels, who chose UAB; linebacker Marcus Anderson, who chose Georgia State; and safety Camari Louis, who chose Kennesaw State.

But things weren’t nearly over for Propst and his staff in getting the names and footage of Packer seniors out there, and for two in particular, the courting from Division I Bowl Subdivision schools goes back to their junior season.

The only one to make a firm commitment since the first signing period is All-American and record-setting placekicker Ryan Fitzgerald. In late January, Fitzgerald committed to Florida State University during an official visit.

“That’s an outstanding move,” said Propst. “I’ve always said he’s the best (kicker) I’ve ever been around. He’ll be great at Florida State, and that’s a big pick-up for them.”

While FSU does have a placekicker returning for his senior season this fall, Propst said it’s possible Fitzgerald could beat him out for the starting job, or at worst he will red-shirt and provide the Seminoles with a reliable kicker for the next four years after 2019.

In the three years Fitzgerald kicked for the Packers varsity team, he handled the PATs/field goals all three years and then the kickoffs and punts the last two. His punting averages were in the 40s, he didn’t miss a PAT as a senior and he ended his career with a state-record 51 field goals.

Then there’s cornerback Jay Ward and offensive lineman Kamaar Bell.

Ward went into the 2018 season committed to the Kentucky Wildcats, but he decomitted as the offers poured in from the likes of LSU and Ohio State. In January Ward visited LSU, Texas A&M, Florida State and Kentucky.

The 6-2 Ward had 11 career interceptions.

At 320 pounds, Bell was part of a pretty potent and experienced Packer offensive line that included Rykard and senior guards Kameren Barnes and Jerick Davis. Bell played both tackle and guard opening the holes for Daijun Edwards, who went over 3,000 career rushing yards as a junior and has 53 career touchdowns, and Ty Leggett.

Bell’s visiting destinations in January included Auburn, Florida State, Indiana and Louisville.

“It’s still up in the air,” said Propst about Ward, Bell and a host of other Packer seniors.

According to Propst, a pair of players – Leggett and defensive lineman Brian Merritt – could actually sign two sets of papers, one being for junior college football. Merritt, the coach said, is considering Florida Atlantic, UAB and Liberty University. In Leggett’s case, Propst said he is Division II qualified but has a chance to become Division I qualified. Therefore, Leggett is one who could sign JUCO papers or put off signing altogether on the chance a Division I opportunity becomes available.

Others, Propst said, have NAIA offers, and it’s just a matter of getting the best financial package possible.
