CAIRO — A 33-year-old Cairo man is dead, and his brother is being questioned in connection with the Friday afternoon shooting death, according to authorities.
Cairo police were notified at 1:45 p.m Friday about a shooting at a residence at 161 13th Street S.W.
Police Chief Keith Sandefur said police were told “someone had a gun, and someone was not breathing.”
“We found an individual in the back yard of that residence,” Sandefur said.
The victim, Travis White, was transported to Grady General Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
The shooting took place at the home of White’s brother, Joseph White, 32, who has been identified as a suspect in the shooting.
“He left the scene on foot, but we have him in custody,” the chief said.
Joseph White lived at the residence. His deceased brother lived at the house part-time, Sandefur said.
Police were interviewing witnesses and others at the scene midafternoon Friday.
Joesph White was transported to the Grady County Jail to be questioned by police.
Sandefur said Southside Elementary and Cairo High schools were locked down until the suspect, who was believed to have a gun, was in custody.
The Friday homicide is the second in Cairo this year,
Sandefur said a homicide took place the same night as a tornado severely damaged the city in early March. Officers were working the homicide when the tornado hit.
