Fitzgerald, Wilson named
to Class 6A All-State team

MOULTRIE – The Colquitt County football team is represented by two veteran seniors on the Atlanta Journal-Constitution’s 2024 Class 6A All-State team.
Region 1-6A Special Teams Player of the Year Brett Fitz-gerald was selected as the first-team all-state place-kicker and three-time all-region defensive lineman Amari Wilson received honorable mention.
The All-State team included 27 first-team selections and 25 players who received honorable mention.
Wilson and Fitzgerald helped the 8-4 Packers win their third-straight region championship in 2024.
For Fitzgerald, the All-State selection is the latest in a host of honors for the four-year starting kicker.
In addition to being named the region Special Teams Player of the Year by the region’s coaches, Fitzgerald also has been named Georgia’s Kicker of the Year by Score Atlanta and was named the 2024 Vereen Sports Medicine Special Teams Player of the Year at the recent ITG Next South Georgia High School football banquet.
This season, the two-time MaxPreps All-American set the Georgia record for career extra points, with 228, and career kicking points, with 369.
He converted all 51 of his extra-point attempts and 12 of his 14 field goal attempts for 87 points this season.
He kicked 47 field goals in his career, including a 43-yarder as time expired to help defeat Lowndes 38-35 this season.
The win over the Vikings was key to the Packers claiming their third straight region championship.
Fitzgerald also had a career-best 52-yarder at Valdosta.
Chason Glenn was the snapper and Logan Morris the holder for the Packers this season.
Wilson was credited with 48 solo and 17 assisted tackles for 65 total stops, including 19 for loss and 8.5 sacks this season.
The 6-foot-1, 240-pounder also scored a pair of touchdowns for the Packers.
He intercepted a pass and returned it 32 yards for a first-quarter touchdown in the region victory at Camden County and caught a 5-yard touchdown pass from Day’Shawn Brown in the playoff game against Collins Hill.
For his career, Wilson had 198 total tackles, including 52 for losses and 15.5 sacks.
Wilson has signed a National Letter of Intent to play collegiately at Georgia Southern.
The Class 6A Offensive Player of the Year was Carrollton quarterback Julian Lewis.
The Defensive Player of the Year was Tyler Atkinson, a linebacker for the state champion Grayson.
Santavious Bryant of Grayson was named the Class 6A Coach of the Year.
Colquitt County fans had the opportunity to watch nine other All-State players this season.
Named to the first team were Camden County tight end Elyiss Williams, Collins Hill defensive lineman Deuce Geralds and North Gwinnett linebacker Jake Godfree.
Other Region 1-6A players receiving all-state honorable mention Defensive Player of the Year Lee Johnson of Richmond Hill and co-Offensive Players of the Year Marvis Parrish of Lowndes and Todd Robinson of Valdosta.
Other Packer opponents receiving honorable mention were defensive lineman Latrell Webb and linebacker Stephen Barjolo of Collins Hill and quarterback Ryan Hall of North Gwinnett.
Receiving Class 5A All-State honors were quarterback Weston Bryan and running back Ousmane Kromah, both of Lee County.
All-Classification Player of the Year Luke Nickel is familiar to Colquitt County fans as well.
The senior quarterback has led Milton to back-to-back state championships.
In the 2024 playoffs, Nickel threw a state record 20 touchdown passes and was 21-for-22 for 413 yards and four touchdowns in Milton’s 56-35 state championship game victory over Langston Hughes.
In the 2023 state quarterfinals, Nickel completed 20-of-32 passes for 289 yards and four touchdowns and rushed 16 times for 119 yards and another score as the Eagles eliminated Colquitt County 39-37.
