Helen Miller and Walter McKenzie were elected as White Springs mayor and vice mayor at a special meeting Thursday.

WHITE SPRINGS — What’s old is new again.

A week after the White Springs Town Council failed to elect a mayor and vice mayor at its organizational meeting, those positions were filled with familiar faces.

In a special meeting Thursday night, Helen Miller was elected mayor with Walter McKenzie named the vice mayor.

Miller previously served as the town’s mayor from 2010 until 2015. She has been the town’s only female mayor.

McKenzie has been vice mayor before as well. He was named vice mayor in 2010 and held that post until 2017.

After the council failed to elect a mayor and vice mayor at its April 27 organizational meeting, a special meeting was called so all five council members could be present. McKenzie was not at the April 27 meeting where Spencer Lofton was nominated to continue serving as mayor but wasn’t elected by a 2-2 vote. Tonja Brown, who has been vice mayor since 2017, was nominated but also didn’t get a majority vote to continue in that role.

At the special meeting Thursday, McKenzie nominated Miller for the mayor position and council member Tom Moore seconded.

The nomination passed with a 3-2 vote. Council member Spencer Lofton and council member Tonja Brown voted against.

The nomination passed with a 3-2 vote with Lofton and Brown again voting against.
