This is the second in a series highlighting Colquitt County’s 15-0 state championship season in 1994.

MOULTRIE — The Colquitt County football team opened the 1994 season with games against the two teams from Thomas County and especially enjoyed both of them.

In the season-opener, the Packers traveled downHighway 319 to face Thomas County Central, the two-time defending Class AAA state champions.

After dispatching the Yellow Jackets, the Packers played host to Thomasville High at Mack Tharpe Stadium.

The Bulldogs had won state championships under Jim Hughes in 1973 and 1974.

Hughes was trying to deliver Colquitt County’s first state title in 1994.

Thomas County Central won state championships in 1992 and 1993 under head coach Ed Pilcher and would win a third straight in 1994 after rebounding from a decisive loss to the Packers in the season-opener.

Colquitt County quarterbacks Clif Henry and Matt Parker combined to complete 15-of-28 passes for 225 yards in the 27-6 victory.

The Yellow Jackets only score came on a 73-yard Johnny Cooksey touchdown run with eight minutes left after Colquitt County had jumped to a 27-0 lead.

The Packers only offensive touchdown came on a 58-yard pass from Parker to Ronald Bonner in the second quarter.

The defense turned in the other two touchdowns on a 42-yard interception return by linebacker David Hunt and a 4-yard fumble return by defensive end Jerry Jones.

Neal Clements had second-quarter field goals of 26 and 31 yards.

The Packers also gave up just one touchdown the following Friday night in their home-opener.

The Bulldogs scored on a 58-yard touchdown pass from Kevin Thompson to Charlie Ramsby, but Thomasville managed just 65 more yards of total offense.

Bonner scored two more touchdowns, hauling in scoring passes from both quarterbacks: a 27-yarder from Parker in the second quarter and  71-yarder from Henry in the third.

 In the fourth quarter, Sam Collins and Tim Sanders added touchdowns on short runs and Clements kicked his third field goal of the season.

Bonner finished the game with eight catches for 158 yards.

Next Wednesday, the Packers blank Dougherty and demolish Josey to go to 4-0.
