A dog awaits adoption at the Moultrie-Colquitt County Humane Society.

MOULTRIE, Ga. – Recently, the Moultrie-Colquitt County Humane Society Board has been dismantled and rebuilt with new members. This comes just months after the call to create a new board back in May of this year.

“The previous board was just not working well together,” said Moultrie City Manager Pete Dillard. “As a new board, it really needed people who knew how to do board organization.

“We wanted people who had no previous connection with the board,” Dillard said. “We wanted a functioning board because a functioning board can successfully apply for grant money. The previous board wasn’t quite functioning and didn’t have quite have the talents we needed in order to be a functioning board.

“The board we have now is very professional and meets those talents.”

In order for citizens to qualify and be considered for a board member role, they must fill out an application with the city or the county. The city has appointed three people to the board, including the chairman, and the county has appointed four.

“It changes every year. Next year the chairman will be from the county appointees,” said Dillard.

New members were notified the week of Oct. 5 of their selection to the board.

“From the city, we have the chairman Rich Gallagher, Katie Jenkins, Steve Webber, and from the county we have county commissioner Johnny Hardin, Jim Matney, Dr. Mo Yearta and Jon Schwalls,” Dillard said.

“They had a meet and greet to get to know each other and choose a chairman first,” he said. “The next thing they have to do is hire a director. Right now, they’re looking at by-laws, placing ads for a director and then they’ll start work on a budget.”
