MOULTRIE – The Moultrie-Colquitt County Parks and Recreation Authority expands its programming.

MCCPRA has a calendar full of new programming for the community. Recreation has always been associated with sports and physical activities, but the recreation authority offers much more.

50 years and up programs

Beginning in January, MCCPRA is expanding opportunities for the 50 Years and older. Physical fitness programs include Chair Yoga and Flow Yoga on Monday and Wednesday mornings beginning at 9:30 a.m., at the Ryce Community Center. Participants can choose one or both classes. Walk the Gym will be available at both Tommy Meredith and Shaw gyms every morning from 10 a.m. until noon. Cardio Drumming is back and will be offered each Monday afternoon, from 5:30-6:15 p.m., at Tommy Meredith Gym. All of these activities are free to the community, but pre-registration is required.

The recreation authority will be offering Arts and Crafts activities every Tuesday from 2-4 p.m., at Ryce Community Center. A Saturday opportunity, from 10 a.m. to noon, will also be offered each month for those who work weekdays. Activities for January through March will include creating a vision board, decorating an art journal, making a 2025 affirmation jar, Valentine candy workshop, handmade valentines, sewing lavender sachets and a soup bowl cozy, jewelry making, a kitchen utensil wind chime, and alcohol dyed silk scarf making.

The first Friday of each month starting at 5:30 p.m., MCCPRA will offer opportunities for the 50 and older population to gather for fun including Bingo, Movie Nights, A “Senior” Prom, Rock Out With Your Crock Out, Trivia and more. Some of these events have a small fee to offset the costs of food but most are free. Pre-registration is required for these events.

Events for all ages

Opportunities for all ages include a Cinnamon Roll Workshop on Friday, January 10, beginning at 5:30 p.m., at Ryce Community Center. Sewing classes, for ages 10-17 and adults 18 & up, will take place on Thursday, January 9, (make a pillowcase), 23 (make a tote bag) and 30 (make an apron).

A Cosmic Pickle Ball tournament will be held Saturday, January 25, at Tommy Meredith Gym from 6-9 p.m. Registration is open now and spaces are limited.

The Power Wheels Derby will be held on Saturday, February 1, for drivers ages 2-4 and 5-7, at Jim Buck Golf Complex. Participants will be issued a license to drive prior to races and will be divided into heats of four. Winners from each heat will race for the overall win. Every participant gets a medal and first through third place final winners, in the two ages groups, receive a trophy. There is an entry fee of $10 and some rules apply. Learn to Crochet will be offered to participants 12 years old and up on February 6, 13 and 27 beginning at 4 p.m., at Ryce Community Center. A fee of $10 covers all costs and participants will learn to make granny squares to create a lap blanket.

Events happening in March

March will kick off with a kite flying event on Saturday, March 1, from 2-4 p.m., at Main Street Park.

Friday, March 14, is a school holiday, and the kids will need somewhere safe and fun to be. Friday Fun Day will be open, from 8 a.m. until 4 p.m., with activities and snacks provided. Preregistration with a $10 fee is required.

The Drive-In Movie event will take place Friday, March 14, beginning at 5 p.m., at Tommy Meredith Gym. Children will be given a box to turn into a car for the movie “Turbo.” Tires, a license and some decorating materials are provided but children are encouraged to bring their own decorations, as well. A concession stand will also be open for hot dogs, drinks and treats. Pre-registration with a $5 fee is required.

Saturday, March 15, local photographer Ashley Adams will lead a Nature Photography shoot along the Tom White Linear Trail from 3-5 p.m. Bring a camera or use a phone for this educational excursion.

Save the date for Nerf Night Friday, March 21, at Tommy Meredith Gym, from 6-8 pm Preregistration is required with a $10 fee to cover pizza, drinks and snacks.

Registration for sports teams

T-Ball signups are open until January 31 for children aged 3-6. Teams will practice one day a week during March with coaches choosing the day and time. Approximately two scheduled games per week will be played on Tuesdays and Thursdays during April and May.

Softball registration is open to students ages 7-14 and baseball registration for students ages 7-12 years old is also open now. Teams will practice one day a week during March with coaches choosing the day and time. Approximately two scheduled games per week will be played on Tuesdays and Thursdays during April and May. Register now and take advantage of the Early Bird reduced registration fee.
