Lauren Stone swims as part of Tift County’s 200-yard medley relay at the Last Chance Meet Monday. Stone had a hand in three of Tift’s wins last Saturday, when the boys and girls teams won the region titles.

TIFTON — Make it four in a row for the Tift County High swim teams.

The Blue Devils and Lady Devils both captured the Region 1-AAAAAAA championships Friday in Douglas.

The Lady Devils nearly outscored the rest of the field combined. They had 233 points. Colquitt County was second at 145 points, Camden County third at 90 and Lowndes fourth at 24.

The Blue Devils had a 50-point win, 190.5-140.5 over second place Camden County. Lowndes scored 81 for third and Colquitt had 28 points for fourth.

Tift County’s swimmers held up their end of the bargain by winning both titles, which meant the swim coaches went into the pool.

Head coach Ivey Vickers said Monday the water “felt good.”

Judging by their reactions in photos posted to the team’s Facebook page, the tradition of coaches getting wet seems to be equally important to both coaches and athletes.

“It’s enjoyable to see the kids light up,” she said.

Tift won 18 of 22 races and were ahead from the outset, with victories in the first six events.

Beau Bengston, J.D. Bengston, Kirsten Murphy and Ansley Mobley were all part of four wins each.

Beau Bengston and J.D. Bengston teamed with Jacob Redd and Caleb Rice to win the 200 medley relay. The Bengstons also teamed with Dylan Coker and Samuel Lawson for first place in the 200 freestyle relay.

J.D. Bengston had individual wins in the 100 freestyle and 200 freestyle and Beau Bengston won the 500 freestyle and the 100 backstroke.

Murphy had team wins in the 200 medley relay and 200 freestyle. In the former, she teamed with Karoline Ponder, Olivia Thomas and Lauren Stone. In the latter, Murphy’s teammates were Mobley, Ponder and Stephanie Connell.

Individually, Murphy won the 100 butterfly and the 100 freestyle. Mobley’s other wins came solo in the 200 freestyle and 100 freestyle and with teammates Connell, Thomas and Stone in the 400 freestyle relay.

Redd, Thomas and Stone each participated in three wins each.

Tift County’s other wins were in the 200 individual medley (Redd), 100 butterfly (Redd), 500 freestyle (Stone), 100 backstroke (Connell) and 100 breaststroke (Thomas).

The Swim Devils also had 11 second place finishes.

Coker and Stone were second in the 200 freestyle, Ponder finished runner-up in the 200 individual medley and Thomas was second in the 100 freestyle. Sarah Lawson and T.J. Carpenter were both second in the 500 freestyle, as was Ponder in the 100 backstroke and Sarah Lawson and Samuel Lawson in the 100 breaststroke.

The combination of Redd, Coker, Samuel Lawson and Rice were second in the 400 freestyle relay as were Ashlee Golden, Riley Roberts, Autumn Rice and Sarah Lawson.

Golden took third place in the 200 freestyle and 500 freestyle. Spencer Shaw was third in the 100 backstroke and Roberts was third in the 100 breaststroke.

Tift County had its final regular season meet Monday at the local YMCA pool at Hunt Park.

Dubbed the Last Chance Meet, it was the final opportunity for swimmers to swim the required times to qualify for state.

Tift was joined by Colquitt County and unfortunately for the locals, only a girls 200 relay team from Colquitt was able to qualify. Only five races were swum, one a combined boys and girls 500 freestyle.

Tift’s swim teams will be off until Feb. 2, when the swimming portion of the state meet starts at Georgia Tech.
