MOULTRIE, Ga. — The Colquitt County School System announced Tuesday afternoon that schools would be closed on Wednesday as weather forecasters called for ice and possibly snow in South Georgia.
Wednesday was scheduled to be the first day back for students following the two-week Christmas break. Faculty are expected to report for work at 10:30 a.m. if conditions permit.
Icy cold that has already been in the area for two days will be joined overnight by moisture as a powerful storm approaches land from the Atlantic Ocean. Forecasters expect the combination to bring as much as a quarter-inch of ice and an inch of snow to the Colquitt County area, according to City of Moultrie officials.
City Manager Pete Dillard said the city’s public works department has sand prepared to cover freezing bridges and/or roadways. Police and firefighters who are not already on active duty will be on-call in case of an emergency.
Any city utilities customer who loses power can contact the city at 668-6000. You can also report ice over the roads at 668-5423 (city) or 616-7480 (county).
Dillard said the city numbers will be manned beginning at midnight Tuesday.
He said the city expects to open as usual at 8 a.m. Wednesday, and he said the county plans to open normal services at 1 p.m., after the precipitation is expected to end.
