MOULTRIE, Ga. — A Moultrie man shot in the chest on Tuesday evening drove himself to the hospital and was able to identify his assailant, who is being sought by police.

Leeroy Sheppard, 35, told Moultrie police that he was shot by a man with whom he had recently had an issue. He was in a 2004 Ford Escape at about 7:40 p.m. when the assault occurred.

“He’s saying he was driving through the 100 block of Sixth Street Northwest when a few shots rang out,” Moultrie Police Department Lt. Freddie Williams said. “Next thing, he notices a burning sensation in his chest and realized he’s been shot.”

Sheppard arrived in the car at the hospital with a gunshot wound to his upper left torso, Williams said. He received a serious wound and remained hospitalized on Wednesday.

“The offender was identified as Daryll Burks,” Williams said. “There was an altercation between the two of them last weekend that it stemmed from.”

Police have active warrants for the 30-year-old Burks’ arrest on charges of aggravated assault, possession of a firearm by a convicted felon and possession of a firearm during the commission of a felony.

Anyone with information is asked to call police either by dialing 911 or calling (229) 890-5449.

“He should be considered armed and dangerous,” Williams said.
