FT. LAUDERDALE, Fla. – Carson Tyler, after a razor-thin loss in Thursday’s USA Diving Zone B Championships 1-meter action, is now a Gold winner with plenty of room to spare.
On Saturday, it was the 14-15 boys platform event where Tyler of the Moss Farms Diving Tigers out-distanced Kevin Mendez – and kept his cool during weather delays – for first place. With an average score of 52.14, Tyler’s total was 417.15 to the 386 by Mendez, who won the 1-meter Thursday by 0.6 points.
Also in 14-15 platform, Moss Farms teammates Timothy Fagan placed fifth and Nolan Lewis eight.
Saturday was a big day for other Diving Tigers qualifying for Nationals. Jayden Bowman placed fifth in 11 & under boys 3-meter. Abigale White was seventh out of 34 in the 14-15 girls 3-meter springboard.
Bo Bridges and Ruth Anne McCranie – like Tyler – were already semifinal qualifiers for the USA Diving Nationals taking place in Atlanta. The two 12-13 divers added to their itinerary in Friday’s Zone B schedule with two Silver medals.
McCranie was second in the girls 3-meter at 319.05. In eight dives, she won two rounds, including a 54.6 (2.8 degree of difficulty) in the 2 1/2 somersault tuck.
“(McCraine) was going head to head with Lanie Gutch, a close friend and long standing rival from Orlando’s YCF,” said coach John Fox. “It’s fun to watch the two compete against each other. They really bring the best out in each other.”
Bridges was second in platform at 269.05, and he won two dives that were back 1 1/2 somersault twist frees.
“Bridges is starting to dial in,” said Fox. He completed one of the best platform events of his career.”
Jet Geovanni made nationals finishing eighth in the 12-13 boys platform.
“The Moss Farms Diving coaching staff is excited about the youngest members of the team in the 11 & under events,” said Fox.
