- The sign isn't up yet, but a new paint job is one indication that Piggly Wiggly will soon be moving into the former Harvey's location on First Avenue Southeast.
MOULTRIE, Ga. — Moultrie is on the verge of getting a new grocery store.
Moultrie City Council on Tuesday night approved a license to sell beer and wine for off-premises consumption at Piggly Wiggly, which will move into the old Harvey’s location on First Avenue Southeast.
Cody McDaniel, owner of Valdosta Fresh for Less, Inc., which will own the Piggly Wiggly, told the council that his company is waiting on equipment that’s been ordered. If it arrives on schedule, they hope to open the store by the end of this month.
The store will employ between 80 and 90 people, McDaniel said, which includes both full- and part-time positions.
Valdosta Fresh for Less owns several Piggly Wiggly stores across the area, he said.
Moultrie’s Harvey’s store was one of 94 that closed this spring as part of a financial restructuring of Harvey’s parent company, Southeastern Grocers.
In other action Tuesday, the council:
• Saluted Fire Chief Kenny Hannon, who retired March 30 after 40 years with the city.
• Approved a license to sell beer, wine and liquor for on-premises consumption to Oscar Ivan Vidales, manager of Touchdown Sports Bar, 506 Ga. Highway 133 South. This represents a transfer of ownership.
• Skipped an item on the agenda relating to the Minimum Codes Ordinance, which has been the source of conflict with some landlords over the condition of their property. A 90-day moratorium on enforcing a contested building code was enacted May 15, and council members are still working to craft a compromise.
• Approved an agreement with the Georgia Department of Transportation for storm drain repair and replacement at Spence Field Airport. The DOT will pay 75 percent of the project and the city 25 percent, with the city’s share estimated at $10,800.
• Approved a memorandum of understanding to continue participating in the University of Georgia Archway Partnership. Under this agreement, the city, Colquitt County Board of Commissioners, the Colquitt County Board of Education and Colquitt Regional Medical Center contribute $15,000 each to the partnership. Originally, each gave $10,000 and were matched with $10,000 from the University of Georgia, but UGA no longer provides financial support.
• Appointed Dale Williams to the Moultrie-Colquitt County Parks and Recreation Authority for a term beginning immediately and ending Dec. 31, 2019. Williams replaces Dr. Cheau Williams, who resigned due to scheduling conflicts.
• Approved a contract to provide electricity to the Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine, now under construction on Tallokas Road. The college expects to welcome its first class in August 2019, school officials have said.
• Heard from Michael Wheeler, a DJ who wants to play music at Saturday night events through the summer at Wesley Ball Park on First Street and First Avenue Northwest. Mayor Bill McIntosh urged him to get with City Manager Pete Dillard to work out details.
