TIFTON — The Great American Read has come to Tifton.

The Great American Read is an eight-part PBS series that “explores and celebrates the power of reading, told through the prism of America’s 100 best-loved novels.”

“The Tifton library is excited to participate in this nationwide program that highlights reading for fun,” said Vicki Horst, Tifton-Tift County Public Library manager. “It’s not a scientific survey to find “the best,” it is a list of books that a lot of people have found enjoyable. Maybe you will find your next great read here.”

Books on the list include classics, such as “The Adventures of Tom Sawyer” by Mark Twain, “Jane Eyre” by Charlotte Bronte and “Pride and Prejudice” by Jane Austin; modern thrillers, such as “Jurassic Park” by Michael Crichton and “The Stand” by Stephen King; series like Harry Potter by J.K. Rowling, Lord of the Rings by J.R.R. Tolkien and A Game of Thrones by George R.R. Martin and science fiction, including “Dune” by Frank Herbert, “Ready Player One” by Ernest Cline and “The Martian” by Andy Weir.

The 100 books were chosen after a national survey asking Americans to name their most-loved novel. Readers can vote for their favorite from this list until October 18, with voting taking place both online at the kiosk, which will be at the Tifton-Tift County Public Library through Friday, July 27.

Those interested in reading the list or voting for their favorite novel can visit www.pbs.org/the-great-american-read to get the list and vote. The list is also available at the library, as are the books.
