Northwest Georgia Healthcare Partnership receives grant to bring on AmeriCorps workers
DALTON, Ga. — The Georgia Commission for Service and Volunteerism has awarded the Northwest Georgia Healthcare Partnership a $149,311 grant to hire AmeriCorps members. AmeriCorps is often referred to as the domestic Peace Corps. Members go into local communities to help nonprofit service agencies. “Organizations are currently recruiting for AmeriCorps members to begin service this fall,” according to a press release from the Georgia Department of Community Affairs. “AmeriCorps members typically receive a modest living stipend and a Segal AmeriCorps Education Award, or scholarship, upon completion of their service. The award can be used to pay for future education costs or to pay back student loans.” Partnership Executive Director Greg Dent said the grant will be used to hire three full-time and 14 part-time AmeriCorps members. “That’s in addition to the 10 AmeriCorps VISTA (Volunteers in Service to America) positions that we have,” he said. “We have vacancies for those as well.” The state grant is for one year. “But it’s renewable for up to two years, so these are potentially three-year positions,” Dent said. Those interested in serving can learn more by visiting americorps.gov/join or by calling the Partnership at 706-272-6662.
