Former Diving Tiger receiving state honor Saturday

MOULTRIE – Former Moss Farms diver Lane Bassham Winchester will be inducted in the Georgia Aquatic Hall of Fame Saturday at the Atlanta Athletic Club.

It will be the third such honor for the 1999 Colquitt County High honor graduate and eight-time All-American at the University of Alabama. She was inducted in the University of Alabama Swimming and Diving Hall of Fame in 2007 and into the Colquitt County Sports Hall of Fame in 2012.

She will be the third member of the Moss Farms family to be included in the Georgia Aquatic Hall of Fame.

Robert “Moose” Moss, her one-time coach, was a member of its inaugural class in 2011.

Her National Championship synchro partner and Moss Farms teammate Lauryn McCalley Niday was inducted last year.

She began diving under Moss as a 9-year-old and continued in the program while being coached by Jay Lerew and Wenbo Chen. She won a YMCA national championship and was a GHSA state champion while competing for Colquitt County High School.

An outstanding junior diver, she won numerous events and represented the United States in Can-Am-Mex Championships held at the Moose Moss Aquatic Center. She also medaled in an international competition held in Waldkraiburg, Germany.

She earned a scholarship at the University of Alabama, where she was the captain of the swimming and diving team her junior and senior years.

While at Alabama, she won three gold and two silver medals in SEC Championship meets and was the conference Diver of the Year in 2004.

She competed in all three events – 1-meter, 3-meter and platform – in four straight NCAA Championship. As a senior in 2004, she won the NCAA National 3-meter championship, was the runner-up on 1-meter and was named the Diver of the Meet.

She also was a member of the National Team from 1997-2003 and won three national synchro championships in 2000 and 2001 with partner Lauryn McCalley Niday.

In 2000, she placed eighth in the U.S. Olympic Trials.

She is the daughter of Dennie and Anahea Bassham. Sister Brooke Basham competed on the swimming and diving team at the University of Georgia.

Also being inducted into the Georgia Aquatic Sports Hall of Fame on Saturday are female master swimmer Francine Sweeney Williamson; six-time All-American diver Glynn Perry; 3-time SEC champion and 10-time All-American swimmer Will Artley; and long-time swimming coach Jason Turcotte.
