JASPER, Fla. — White Springs Mayor Spencer Lofton wants to lease South Hamilton Elementary School for $1 a year.
He presented his plan to the Hamilton County School Board on Aug. 28 at a workshop.
“We’d like to change the South Hamilton Elementary School into what we call our White Springs Town Center,” Lofton said.
The plan includes relocating town hall there and adding parking.
“The plan is to move town hall and create a mini mall for businesses to come in,” Lofton said.
Ideas that Lofton had for the offices in the town center are satellite college courses, food pantry, real estate and certified nursing classes, daycare center and dry cleaner drop off location.
He said WJLN radio station is interested relocating there.
He also said he is talking to some people to get a pharmacy there.
“I would love to take access of the entire property and take it off your hands and put it under our insurance as well as paying for the power,” Lofton said.
I think it is great but the big question is if it all turns out like you have it drawn up,” School Board member Gary Godwin said.
Lofton said he was pretty secure in some of the providers coming.
Superintendent Rex Mitchell said for the daycare and other businesses, the building may not be up to code.
Godwin said any renovation would be the town’s responsibility.
The school board will discuss the lease with possible action at its monthly meeting Tuesday at 6 p.m.
