MOULTRIE — Jay Woods is fashioning himself a fine collegiate football career at a small school in Williamsburg, Ky., located in the southeast corner of the state just north of the Tennessee line.

The former Colquitt County receiver/safety is in his third season at the University of the Cumberlands, an NAIA program that is part of the Mid-South Conference, after playing his freshman year at Northwest Mississippi Community College.

Last Saturday, Woods helped the No. 16-ranked Patriots win their fifth straight game to open the season by intercepting his second pass of the season, and the fifth of his career, and being credited with three tackles in a 40-10 victory over Kentucky Christian.

Woods has played 18 career games for the Patriots and has 102 total tackles, including 65 solo stops. Two of those tackles were for losses.

He also has broken up 11 passes and recovered two fumbles.

And last year, he returned one of his three interceptions for a touchdown.

Hanging on to a thrown football comes naturally to Woods, who, in Colquitt County’s 44-26 victory at Brunswick in 2012, caught 13 passes for a school-record 233 yards and three touchdowns.

Those 13 receptions are second-most in Packers history, tying him with Bobby Hill, who caught 13 against Thomas County Central earlier that season.

Despite his receiving abilities, the Packers staff moved him to defense a year later and he has thrived in the secondary ever since.

Woods is studying fitness and sports management at the University of the Cumberlands.

Also in the Patriots’ win over Kentucky Christian, Ja’Kobe Shealey, another former Packer, chipped in a pair of assisted tackles.
