THOMASVILLE — Once again, local residents are being threatened by phone scammers who say the victims must cough up money to prevent bad things from happening to them.
“It’s our turn in the 229 area code, I guess,” said Capt. Steven Jones, Thomas County Sheriff’s Office public information officer.
Scammers are calling local residents saying they have a warrant for the victim’s arrest, that the victim had jury duty, did not show up for court and faces punishment.
The punishment will go away if the person immediately sends money to settle the situation.
“Otherwise,” Jones said, ” ‘The sheriff will pick you up.’ “
Dozens of scammer calls were reported Thursday to the sheriff’s office.
Phone numbers showing up on caller IDs are being spoofed to make the calls appear to be coming from locations other than where they are originating.
“Most are coming from a Washington, D.C., area code,” Jones said.
All the sheriff’s office can do is offer advice: Don’t fall for it.
Jones said those being called should never give money, banking or any other personal information to callers.
