THOMASVILLE — Although the City of Thomasville has no property tax, it is required by the city charter that the zero millage rate be approved by city council.

On Monday, council members approved — on first and second readings — a zero millage rate. Council members voted unanimously in favor of the rate.

The council also approved an 18.815 mill 2018 property tax rate called for by the Thomasville City Board of Education.

The city school millage rate is a 7.73 percent increase over the rollback rate. The rate is 1.35 mills more than in 2017. Each mill of the 2018 tax will produce about $668,000.

By law, the school board recommends a millage rate, which is set by city council. The city collects property taxes for the city school system.

“They are the recommending authority. You are the levying authority,” Lynn Williams, assistant city manager for economic development and communications, told the council.

The school tax levy also was approved on first and first readings.

Williams said the emergency resolutions approved by the council on first and second readings are necessary to give the city tax collection staff time to prepare tax bills for mailing.
