With the basketball season set to tip off in North Florida, high school gyms are ready to be packed with energized crowds.

Whether it’s a no-look pass, a buzzer-beating shot or rim-rocking dunk, each member of the Preseason Suwannee Valley Boys Basketball Team is guaranteed to bring the crowd to it’s feet during the 2018-19 season.

And during the season, The Suwannee Democrat, Jasper News and Mayo Free Press will feature each for an in-depth look at what makes them a member of the preseason all-area team.

Nick McClain

Hamilton County, junior

McClain can take over a game with his scoring ability, as he showed last season with a 20-point performance in a district semifinal that propelled Hamilton County into the playoffs. He’ll be the focal point of Hamilton County’s offense this year along with Tony Stockton.

“Nick is a complete player all over the floor. I believe his rebounds and assists will also increase this year.”

— HCHS coach Eugene Jones

Tony Stockton

Hamilton County, senior

Extremely fast, Stockton is almost always a step ahead of the defense — whether he’s breaking down a defender in the half-court or breaking out in transition.

“Tony is a vocal leader. He’s a great ball handler, an above-average passer, not afraid to rebound and he can knock down the open 3.”

— HCHS coach Eugene Jones

Ben Massey

Lafayette, senior

With the Hornets losing four big scorers from last season, Massey will be very important for LHS.

“One of the top guards in the area. Very athletic, a good scorer who can get to the basket.”

— LHS coach Jimmy Blankenship

Tyrece Freeman

Suwannee, junior

The crafty left-hander is a natural scorer. He’s a good shooter and an even better ball handler.

“Tyrece just loves basketball. Anytime there is a basketball game going on anywhere, Tyrece is playing. Part of being good at basketball is time on the court. He’s starting to act like a leader now.”

— SHS coach Jeremy Ulmer

Colton Leibold

Branford, sophomore

The Buccaneers are expecting to win a lot more games this season, and the sophomore standout is one reason why.

“Colton’s a great team leader for us on and off the court. He’s a point guard with the ability to handle the ball, score, and make plays for others. He has a high basketball IQ and makes every other player on the court better.”

— BHS coach John Blalock
