I-75 chase ends in standoff

SPARKS, Ga. – A chase that started in Turner County and continued into Cook County over the weekend ended with a standoff and an officer shooting a service weapon before a suspect was taken into custody. At approximately 5 p.m., Ashburn police attempted to stop a southbound vehicle on Interstate 75 in Turner County, according to a Georgia Bureau of Investigation press release.  The driver refused to stop and was pursued, the release stated. Georgia State Patrol troopers used a precision immobilization technique to stop the driver in Cook County, according to the GBI. Lowndes County Sheriff Ashley Paulk said his office’s Special Ops Team and the Bearcat, a bullet-resistant assault vehicle, were called to Cook County because the suspect was armed and threatening harm to himself and law-enforcement officers. Paulk said officers negotiated with the suspect for about half an hour.  After consulting with the Cook County sheriff, Paulk said tear gas was used to get the suspect out of the vehicle.  After the suspect displayed a handgun, a Turner County deputy fired his weapon, according to the GBI press release. Paulk estimated the incident came to an end at about 8 p.m.  Erin Sean Hogue, 26, of Jacksonville, Fla., was taken into custody and transported to Tift Regional Medical Center for a non-life threatening injury. The GBI is investigating the case as an officer-involved shooting, according to the release.  Anyone with information or video of the incident is asked to contact the Cook County Sheriff’s Office at (229) 896-7471 or the GBI Douglas Office at (912) 389-4103.
