Award-winning art exhibit to visit Milledgeville
MILLEDGEVILLE, Ga. — Forty-five award-winning pieces of art from disabled artists across Georgia will be on display March 8-30 at the Allied Arts-Marlor House, which is located at 201 N. Wayne St. in Milledgeville. The entries in the 2016-17 exhibits include paintings, photographs, clay pottery, mosaics, textiles and other mediums considered fine art. The eight-city tour kicked off in Brunswick in October and concludes in Moultrie in July. This will conclude the 32nd annual tour exhibit. This year 16 artists exhibited a total of 27 pieces of photograph, yarn, acrylic, mixed media and watercolor. The mission of Georgia Artists with Disabilities is to provide avenues through which Georgia artists with disabilities can display their artistic accomplishments in all disciplines of the arts, and to create public awareness of the artistic skills these artists have developed by overcoming the obstacles of their disabilities. Georgia Artists with Disabilities Inc. is a 501(c) (3) organization.
Stage planned at downtown Chatsworth City Park
CHATSWORTH, Ga. — The Murray Arts Council announces a call for volunteers for a concert series to be performed in Chatsworth City Park and a new stage that is being built this year. The volunteer meeting is Sunday from 3 to 5 p.m. at the Murray Arts Council, 121 E. Market St. in downtown Chatsworth. The meeting is open to the public. Desserts and coffee will be served. The Murray County Thriving Communities team was one of three local teams who worked for the opportunity of earning a $20,000 grant from the Lyndhurst Foundation in Chattanooga to identify and execute a community project that incorporates arts or area culture that would also be a tool for driving economic development. Murray County received notification of its final grant approval for $21,000 last week. “Our project is to build a permanent stage in City Park — which already gets a lot of use from residents — to enable us to present concerts and other productions for the community,” said Lori McDaniel, president of the Murray Arts Council and a member of the Murray County Thriving Communities team. Once the stage is built, the Murray Arts Council will take responsibility for hosting a concert series each year. For more information, go to facebook.com/murraycountyartscouncil or murray-arts.com.

South Georgia cancer survivors recognized
VALDOSTA – Cancer survivors will be recognized later in the month. On Friday, March 17, the American Cancer Society and the South Georgia Medical Center Pearlman Cancer Center invite cancer survivors and their caregivers to attend the annual Survivors Dinner. It will be held 6-7:30 p.m. at Cross Pointe Church. Theme: “Passport to Hope.” Hosts will take their guests on a journey around the world in celebration of the cancer survivor, according to a press release. The event is free and includes a meal for the survivor and one caregiver. Registration is required; call (229) 259-4611; or email amy.bartow@sgmc.org. “We look forward to this event every year. It’s so important to acknowledge our survivors and their caregivers with a night of celebration,” says Bridgett Young, PCC administrative director. According to the American Cancer Society, there are more than 400,000 cancer survivors in Georgia. As the number of survivors continues to grow, providers learn more about their needs. The PCC was the first center in the region to offer an in-depth survivorship program that addresses the unique physical, social, and emotional needs of a cancer survivor, according to the press release. “Survivorship is a vital aspect of cancer care,” Young said. “Our team is here to support patients as they transition into life after treatment.” More information: Visit sgmc.org.
