MOULTRIE – Less than 24 hours after a last-minute victory over Westover at home, the Colquitt County boys basketball team traveled to Roanoke, Ala., on Saturday and kept its winning streak alive.
The Packers scored 23 points in both the first and third quarters and went on to a 78-56 victory over Pike Road (Ala.) in the Georgia-Alabama Shootout.
The win was the seventh in a row to start the season for the Packers.
Pike Road falls to 11-5.
Colquitt was coming off a 49-48 victory over Westover in which the Packers scored the tying and winning points on a pair free throws by Jakari Byrd with 14.6 seconds remaining.
The Packers never let Pike Road make a game of it in Roanoke.
The Patriots pulled to within six points at half, but the Packers 23-point outburst in the third quarter, keyed by Marcus Moore’s seven points, put the game out of reach.
Kanilyn Jones led the Packers with 17 points.
After scoring 17 the night before, Byrd added 16 against Pike Road.
Cason Harden had 15, including 14 in the first half, and Moore had 11.
Ja’Shar Kinsey had seven; Quan Kinsey added five; Alexis Barge had two free throws; and Jalyn Pace had one.
“I was very proud of how the guys came out and attacked this game, because they just had a tough win against Westover and to go on the road and a 3.5-hour bus ride was tough mentally,” coach Andy Harden said. “They played well and I’m so proud of their effort.”
Harden still marveled at crowd and its reaction to the Packers Friday night victory over Westover.
“They brought some energy to the gym that was amazing and helped us pull out a win,” he said.
Colquitt’s boys and the 6-0 girls will travel to Albany on Tuesday to face Dougherty.
