THOMASVILLE — Ousted Meigs mayor Linda Harris could spend up to six months at a detention center following her sentencing Thursday morning at Thomas County Superior Court.
Harris was sentenced by Superior Court Judge Richard Cowart to five years probation for a February conviction of violation of oath of office and a concurrent 12 months for theft by taking.
Before sentencing, Harris told the judge, “I love my family and please don’t send me to prison. Please don’t.”
Once accepted into a facility, Harris will spend between 90 to 180 days in a detention center. Harris is at liberty until she reports to her assigned detention center.
While under probation, Harris is barred from Meigs City Hall and Meigs Community Center — including the monthly city council meetings.
Harris is also prohibited from running for office for the duration of her post-sentence.
Other factors of Harris’ sentence include 200 hours of community service, a $2,500 fine, attend alcohol and substance abuse and anger management treatment, avoid alcohol and drug use, and paying attorney and court associated fees.
Harris is also prohibited from contact with Elisha McDaniels, a former City of Meigs intern. During Harris’ trial, McDaniels testified she reported $80 missing from Meigs City Hall — the incident Harris for which stood trial.
Harris also cannot harass City of Meigs employees.
“I’m glad it happened like it did,” Harris said after the sentencing.
Harris said she was advised not to comment further.
Character witnesses, including family members, friends, and others, testified prior to sentencing.
Some witnesses wept as they pleaded with Judge Cowart for a probation sentence.
“If you take her away, you’re taking the backbone of our family away,” Tracey Arrington, Harris’ niece, said. “Without her, we would fall apart.”
Harris was found guilty after a two-day trial that concluded Feb. 3. The incident Harris was charged with occurred in October 2015.
Harris was recalled as mayor in May 2015.
